What To Buy For A Chicago Winter

This week in Chicago was a not-so-gentle reminder that winter is upon us once again. I’ve had a few friends move here in the past year, and, like myself when I first moved here from Arizona, they have no idea what to buy for the winter months! I find myself sending this list of what to buy for a Chicago winter to weather newbies a LOT, so I thought I’d share with you all as well!

Keep in mind that there are absolutely cheaper options out there for everything I have listed. However, almost single every item on here is something I own and love and would absolutely buy again. Remember, if you buy quality things in the first place, you’ll never have to buy them again!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you’re going to need to invest a bit to stay warm on very cold days. I recommend this parka – it’s the newer version my old coat that I used and loved for 3 winters.

I finally took the plunge and splurged on this Canada Goose parka which is a favorite among Chicagoans. The hood is the best! Although I had to say I wish I had bought a longer version (even though it would have been even more expensive).

As for boots, I have two recommendations. The first is this pair of Sorels – I wear them maybe 5 days total during the winter (unless it’s a particularly snowy year) but they save my life during those days. These things will keep your toes warm and dry and are worth every penny! Just look at the reviews.

Another pair of boots that many people have in their lineup are L.L.Bean Boots. They are cute and perfect for fall and winter when it isn’t too cold. I have (and adore) the 8 inchers. Note: these sell out every single year, and FAST. Get them before it starts to get remotely chilly, or you’ll be waiting until next year.

Oh, and while you’re at it, make sure you get some nice warm socks.

This sweater/jacket is one of my favorites ever. I left it on a plane once and was legitimately SO upset… ask my poor friends who picked me up from the airport. Luckily Idan was able to get it from lost and found for me… I digress. It’s so comfy and I wear it literally every single day the second the temps drop below 65. I also just got Idan one because I decided he needed one too! The men’s version is linked here.

Now, you need something for that in between weather. Where it’s too cold for a hoodie, but too warm for your parka. A light puffy jacket like this one is perfect.

I recently purchased this Barbour jacket and have been wearing it every day when it’s over 40 degrees. It’s so cute and preppy! I fell in love the moment I saw it.

Okay, last expensive coat – promise. This cocoon coat is a favorite among Chicago women, as it’s chic and functional and you can wear it with a dress (whereas your parka will look a little funny). These often sell out – fair warning!

If you have the right gear, you can definitely survive a Chicago winter. And trust me when I say that even if you buy this entire list from start to finish, you still won’t be done – I have acquired so many coats, jackets, sweaters, boots, gloves, etc. over the past 3 years and the majority of my closet is fall/winter themed (it has to be that way when it’s chilly for 8/12 months of the year). You’ll find a mix that’s right for you!

Definitely comment if you have any questions; I’m so happy to help everyone find their way through the arctic that is Chicago winters. Stay warm out there!
