I’m not a particularly religious person (and I promise this is the only post I’ll ever write about the subject). Though raised Jewish (challah!), I consider myself more internally spiritual than devout to a specific faith. I believe in being a nice human, and I believe that everything in the universe is connected and that everything happens for a reason.
My friend/blogger babe Taryn told me about her personal prayer routine, and I quickly adopted it into my own daily custom. It’s pretty simple, really – just four little words:
Gimme
Thanks
Oops
Wow!
That’s it.
Gimme. Thanks. Oops. Wow! They’re pretty self-explanatory, if you really think about it. I wrote them on a post-it and put it on my desk at work so that I could be constantly reminded of these four little words. And you know what? It works. I find myself internally reflecting more than ever before. I’m more thankful than I’ve ever been before (we live in such abundance). And I’m generally more knowledgeable about what I really want out of life.
Just a quick little example of my recent usage of this tactic:
Gimme – Needing a little more direction over here… thanks.
Thanks – Thanks for my friends and family, a roof over my head, a job that I love, and food in my fridge. Also, thanks for my health and fully-working body!
Oops – Sorry about being judgmental sometimes… working on that!
Wow! – I still can’t believe how small this world is… I’m in awe of life’s timing.
I’m pretty sure this method applies to anyone, no matter what religion (or lack of religion). I could be wrong on that one, but I’m going to take this moment to triple-dog-dare you to try it. Let me know what happens!
